I just asked Dad for a ride two miles down the road to a locally/privately owned convenience store. We know the owners and have for 20 years.

Anywho. The list of goods I bought:

1. 1 gallon of milk
2. A candy bar
3. cheese
4. Tostitos chips
5. 1 loaf of whole-wheat bread.

I handed the cashier a $20.00 ... I have $3.19 remaining from that.

A GALLON of milk is $4.59.
And y'all thought GAS was expensive????
This is getting STUPID!
SHEESH!

It's still cheaper than in Hawaii

Hey T!!

In this weeks' (7/23-7/29/08) sales ad one supermarket has that gallon ON SALE as $5.19, not including sales tax.

Sharon: Cost of Living!

YIKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's *brutal*.

ps: I think our local Wal-Mart is in the practice of highway robbery. I asked my Dad to pick up a new wheeled garbage can--the hard plastic 30 gallon with the locking lid?

Wal Mart wants $65.00 for that thing.

Milk is expensive too

Beginning of this year a 2 litre can was 96 euro-cents and now its 1 euro and 40 cents ? And 2 months ago the farmers were tired of it and started spreading their milk over their grounds ! Because they sure as hell did not get the full price on it , only the government got that.

You know what pi**sed me off

You know what pi**sed me off tonight...

I discovered that a half gallon container of ice cream is NOT a half gallon anymore. It's 1.5 QUARTS. It would be OK with me, other than the fact that the price for the 1.5 quarts is the same as it was when they sold it as a half gallon! I ask you...where is the love?

Rick

Raincloudmusic's picture

Wait a minute....

Uh...I thought 4 qt. = 1 gallon?

Where is the love, INDEED!
GEEZ! I guess I won't be buying ice-cream anytime soon...!

That means...

Tomorrow when I buy gas it's going to be $4.45 per gallon so my gas will be cheaper than you milk! Go figure???
:)~

Interestingly enough, I

Interestingly enough, I noticed that a gallon of gas here in Indy is DOWN to $3.79. It was $4.15 here about a week ago. A 36 cent swing. Kinda' surprised me, although I did hear that the price for a barrel of crude oil is down $30 from a month ago.

tanyap's picture

It's dropping here...

The thing is we're all excited that it's dropping below $4.89 per gallon. Remember when gas hit $2.00 PG and we were freaking out...then 3.00 it's hard for everyone to keep the perspective. I remember being in high school and I had one of the first Honda's, that little 2 door thing, and I'd pile 5 of us in there we'd all pool our change (literally) get enough gas to drive 100 miles to Sacramento and 100 miles back to Tahoe. All on about $8-10.00. Demand is totally dropping, unfortunately I have to drive 50 miles a day back & forth to work with most of the waste sitting in traffic just burning fuel. Now the new problem in L.A is the amount of new motorcycle drivers. There are so many more that when I'm sitting in traffic I start counting them, I've got nothing better to do! So today while listening to the radio this morning, there were 2 accidents involving motorcycles that had 2 different freeways totally screwed. Then on the way home 3 accidents with motorcycles and 1 fatality. Again, 3 freeways totally screwed. Now think about how many more additional cars are sitting and burning fuel? One guy that probably hasn't gone to school to learn to ride that bike now puts himself on the freeway and creates more havoc for hundreds of thousands of people all to save a few dollars...this is another FU to the environment. I'm coming off my soapbox now...had to vent!

LOVE the two door Honda

LOVE the two door Honda story. A good friend of mine had one of those and just like you, he was our 'school bus' and picked four us up every morning before school.

I bought a hybrid Camry last year and I am so glad I was able to get one while the getting was good. I know they're not the answer to all of our energy woes, but every little bit helps. I average about 37 miles per gallon (combined city and highway). In a situation where I am sitting in traffic, the gas engine shuts off, which would be perfect when sitting in LA traffic - or even Indy traffic when it's congested. I live in a suburb just North of Indianapolis called Carmel. Our mayor here has been pretty progressive and has a green sense about him. The city is installing roundabouts at almost every intersection in the city. The roundabouts keep traffic moving and limits standing at stoplights and stop signs, which ultimately saves motorists drive time and gas. It has cut my normally 22 minute average commute down to 19. I know it doesn't sound like a lot, but when you multiply three minutes by two (my trip there and back), it adds up over the course of a year. Then account for all of the other motorists who benefit from the roundabouts and you can see the total number of minutes it saves everyone.

I'm going to bed now. Have a good evening!

Roundabouts...

I remember driving in England and getting totally confused! Now we have some in Brentwood/Santa Monica and it does keep the traffic moving, I think just by confusion itself! hahaha! I get ya, my drive every year has increased by about 5 to probably 10 minutes over the course of 9 years. Not so good! Now the new Honda hydrogen car is coming out in limited quantities. Christopher Guest and Jamie Lee Curtis each got one. Part of the criteria is that you have to live within a certain distance of the hydrogen filling station. So It's a start, not a complete answer. In the Bay Area they have problems with people STEALING used cooking oil to fill their vehicles...they used to have to hire someone to dispose of it and pay for the disposal now they are making money from it??? Something I was watching last night and I don't remember which manufacturer...the car runs on electricity (for how many miles?) then it uses gas. Kind of makes sense. But now I'm in the middle of the Mojave desert and my kooky hydrogen/electric/used cooking oil car has a problem...now what do I do? And just take this scenario across small towns across America. So much for that car trip! Just seems like we are chasing our tails to come up with a quick solution for a long time problem
then you have the toxic disposal problems of the batteries from the electric cars...is there no end and I know there is certainly someone that is intellectual enough and just dumb smart that can figure it out.

My neighbor was just showing me pictures from the Anniversary events in Detroit this last week. These guys were forward thinking in there time...if we had a little more of that or the government and or car manufacturers weren't surpressing them we have a chance.

Dude! You've really got me on a roll... :)~ Well, it's good to be passionate! :)~

I was so shocked on the traffic in CA. Was unreal! I think I'll stay in Montana...haha...it takes about an hour and 30 minutes to drive 145 miles here to the next town. Could be faster but the cops have been out alot these days. Although a few of our cities are really congested and it totally drives me nuts. I'm all about taking the back roads to get to places.

Roundabouts in Holland

Slowly but surely every city ( however small it is ) is having roundabouts. Only real big problem ? The rules are different in every town !Who gets to go first ? Half the drivers dont even know .But it seems to be working. The Dutch government is getting a greener mind , so to speak ..

Good things come in small packages !

tanyap's picture

I guess...

It's about a little bit of eye contact and being a little more tolerant of each other? Everybody is looking a little confused? Hey! Whatever works...
:)~

Billie S.'s picture

Tolerant ...

Dont know if its just me , but a lot of people here are getting less tolerant .. Here in my area it still is a small town , with people that know eachother. But in the big city ? I would never wanna go back there ! Things have changed ...

Interesting to know...

There is to much communication and then not enough???

Billie S.'s picture

That sorta is the issue Tanya

For a small example , the playgound soap in my neighbourhood ? Nobody seems to know what the other department is doing ! And they are working from the same bloody building.Dont think they ever talk to eachother ? Same in traffic and daily life ! Companies work the same way. Drivers work that way too , guess they think : if i dont get there nobody does ? Dont know , maybe its an ego-thing ?

Good things come in small packages !

Rick! Gas....

$ 3.87 here. That's put the hurt on several folks I know.
OUCH doesn't even begin!

T

Raincloudmusic's picture

T: YEAH!

The store I am talking about that I got this gallon from, is a store I've gone to for 26 years. We know the owners and all that.

Milk stayed at $3.99 for five months...now it's above $4.00.
Wal-Mart in Petal is still selling milk at above $5.00/gallon.

I paid $2.37 for a QUART (!) last week.
This is WAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYY beyond stupid.
