“Listening to CPR, you have to recall the great Duke Ellington’s definitive comment on musical quality: “If it sounds good, it is good.” With that simple approach, David Crosby, Jeff Pevar, and James Raymond bring grace and elegance to contemporary harmonies that echo the best jazz and rock roots. It “sounds good”, which is a simple foundation supporting a complex structure. CPR includes a two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame singer-songwriter with a lasting influence on popular music, a guitarist who’s played with the greatest names in the business, and a keyboard player who’s a composer in television and film, and (like the others), enjoys backup, session, and performance credits with some of the hottest acts in the culture.
It’s this startling blend of solo and ensemble talent that is the basis for the band’s success in the studio and on tour. David Crosby brings almost four decades of experience to the group, as a solo folk artist, and as a founding member of The Byrds and Crosby, Stills, Nash (and on occasion) Young. James Raymond began playing, composing, and arranging as a teenager, and by age thirty has played with top jazz and rock groups, while Jeff Pevar has been a force in the bands behind Ray Charles, James Taylor, Rickie Lee Jones, Joe Cocker, Shawn Colvin, B.B. King and many others. CPR’s close harmonies are like gold and silver threads running through the fabric of their music; following the intricate patterns of sound is an exercise in discovery.
The deceptively easy beat that marks the opening of “Morrison” gives way to righteous indignation in its chorus. There’s a haunting imagery in “Somehow She Knew” that is mirrored by the poignant lyrics of “Time Is The Final Currency,” and a rhythmic lilt to “Little Blind Fish”. The song “It’s All Coming Back To Me Now” simply rocks. All through the album Crosby’s vocals blend effortlessly with Raymond’s and Pevar’s harmonies, creating an effect that’s a soulful reunion of the familiar and the unexpected. CPR creates echoes with every listening, because the heart has a memory of its own.”

“Tearing And Breaking” - The duration of the compilation version is 5:28 while the edit version is 3:47. In the edit, the second verse of the lyrics has been edited out. Also, the ending chorus is repeated two times instead of four with accompaniment, and two times instead of three ‘a cappella’.
“True Colours (rehearsal)” – The duration of the compilation version is, again, 5:28, while the edit version is 3:13. In the edit, the second soprano sax solo by Gerald Albright has been edited out. Also, the vocal ad-libs near the ending have been somewhat cut.
c) Track 3 (“One More Night”) is the same Allen Sides remix included in the “Love Songs” compilation (see entry in “Phil Collins – part 2”).
d) The promo bears two different catalog numbers and two different labels, one for the EU and the other for the US market (see above).

Contrary to the EU single, though, both of these two live tracks (4 and 5) have already been released (same version) in the “Serious Hits... Live! In Berlin” DVD.

Notes:
1) Many thanks to Alessandro Bosi (Phil Collins website forum) for the help with some of the previously unreleased tracks, and the listing of the original album titles these tracks have been taken from. This information is not contained in the CD notes.
2) The titles following the song names indicate which albums the already released tracks have been taken from. This information is not contained in the CD notes.
3) Track 24 (“Always”) appears to be a remixed version of the same “Serious Hits… Live!” DVD performance, although this is not stated anywhere in the CD notes, and there are slight differences between the two. This particular track is however the same already issued as the b-side of the “Both Sides Of The Story” CD/cassette single WEA 4509-94090-2/WE C 795 (1993) (see pictures below).
4) These are the differences between the DVD version of track 24 (“Always”) and the “Love Songs”/b-side version:
a) At 2:32 on the CD: “and not for just a day” is “no no not for just a day”.
b) At 2:57 on the CD: the mix brings up the rimshots.
c) At 3:26 on the CD: the phrasing on “for just a day” is different.
d) At 3:58 on the CD: Daryl Stuermer’s guitar licks appear to be in a more staccato feel.
e) At 4:10 on the CD: Lee’s ascending glissato on bass, right above the “you” coda of the vocals, has been mixed out.
f) The whole of the track vocals appear to have been equalized in post production.

“This compilation is something I’ve been thinking of for a long time now…. a collection of love songs that I’ve either written or co-written and that I consider to be amongst my best work, in addition to songs that have been written by other writers and admired by me from a distance, whilst secretly wishing that I HAD written them! There are also some songs here that I feel extremely close to, but were missed the first time around because of circumstances beyond their control!
It’s not a “Hits” collection, but I would certainly call it a “Best Of”…. Hope you enjoy ‘em… - Phil”

Leo!
I think you must be Lee's biggest fan!!! You put so much effort in this blog! I admire you for that!
I've looked through my collection but found no cd with Lee on it (except ofcourse for the Barefoot Servants and TOTO ones). Guess I'm listening to the wrong music!
Hugs from Holland!
I believe in music, I believe in love.
Music is love and love is music,
If you know what I mean!
Ivy! I'm having a ball doing
Ivy! I'm having a ball doing this and am discovering lots of beautiful albums. And no music is wrong!!
I can imagine you having a ball with this!
Love to see what he's been up to all the years before we got to know him!
No, you are right, as long as it makes you happy any kind of music will do!
Hugs from Holland!
I believe in music, I believe in love.
Music is love and love is music,
If you know what I mean!

Notes:
g) This is the US issue of the Neil Sedaka record album “Overnight Success” (see entry below). The album was issued in the US with two substituted songs.
h) The 1998 US CD reissue contains as bonus: one track taken from the “Laughter In The Rain” album (14); the two substituted songs from the “Overnight Success” album (13, 15); the song “Hey Mister Sunshine” (12), previously released as the B-Side of the single “The Immigrant”.
i) The following credits are taken from the original US record album notes. As usual, the only musicians credited with respective track numbers are Lee and the other members of the rhythm section: this is extended to the CD reissue bonus tracks.
j) Additional credits with respective track number for the other players besides Lee and the rhythm section are only specified in the case of the CD reissue bonus tracks. These credits are taken from the original sources the bonus songs are taken from (i.e. UK LPs), regardless of the CD reissue credit notes.
k) Although, as noted, this record album and “Overnight Success” had 9 songs in common (same takes), there appeared to be discrepancies in the personnel listings for these songs between the US and the UK records. The US CD reissue does not take this into consideration, and includes the same incomplete credits as the US vinyl issue, the only exception being the mention of Elton John as background vocalist for track (4). Jim Keltner, who according to the “Overnight Success” credits plays South American percussion on (bonus) track 13, is not mentioned in the CD reissue notes.

I grew up playing a
I grew up playing a Shoninger my Mom paid $100 for -it's about 100 years old and needs tuning. This video REALLY hits home.
This guy....what's he doing now, living off the interest from this tune??
I hope so. Another Touched-By-God sort. His voice and playing inspire.
Screw the Cat allergies...
I'm heading down to the pound right now...
:)~
T: *LMAO*!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You're killin' me over here!!!!!!
*lolol*
T
KADISON: **KILLER**!!!
Leo,
Have been so busy today that I totally missed this addition to sklar's credits. (Heck I just got back online after TWO HOURS with no DSL connectivity whatever...).
Kadison's "Painted Desert Serenade" REMAINS my fave.
His tunes helped get me through the loss of a really sweet 4-year-old buddy pal named Lacey.
Kadison's voice is amazing, but his piano chops dwarf my own and I majored on the instrument in college and have played for 32 years.
NICE to see that Leland worked with him.
You surprised me with this listing of Joshua's work.
Grazie, amico!
T
You're welcome, T.! "Delilah
You're welcome, T.! "Delilah Blue" has big sprawling narratives and a John/Taupin sensibility. Kadison is very gifted, both as a performer and a writer. I was not in the know about him (thanks Lee..), but he is apparently very popular in Germany yet didn't manage to crossover to Latin/Italian countries. I'm sure some of those Italian listeners who admire acts like Gavin DeGraw or Daniel Powter might get a kick out of Kadison as well.
KADISON: Jones/Joel
Joshua's piano stylings to me are eerily similar to Billy Joel/Howard Jones/Hornsby.
Absolutely wide-open chord voicings, and very lyrical melocis stuff. He OWNED the Fall of 1995.
What was that one he had -I think the title track off "PDS" -every time it cued, the intro stopped me in my tracks.
You're right about the Elton/Bernie vibe.
T
Should be "Jesse"..
Should be "Jesse".. Joel/Hornsby/Jones are no longer hitmakers in Italy, while DeGraw and Powter are, so that's the marketing goal ;) But i figure he's ok as he is, and that's just as well, because who in his right artistic mind would want to be devoured by this millennium's industry Moloch?
Kadison: Jesse
GRAZIE AMICO!
You got that right-I'd forgotten the title bu tthe lyrics are just the best 'program-music'/story-songs outside of Robbins gunfighter ballads.
Elton's touring...Laboriel Jr. backing him on kit.
Sir Elton is one of my faves and Billy Joel KILLS me. I have a book with some of his tunes.... "Leningrad", "the Downeaster, Alexa"... from "Storm Front".
That got me through serious bullS*** in music school. I'd ditch Haydn for Joel's stuff and we're talking SERIOUS music therapy sessions.
Ha ha.
Kadison was quite a handsome guy-but play like that and he coudl have been not so and I'd have STILL listened. He had his own thing and it was and probably still is pretty amazing to hear.
Real relaxing to listen to him, very cool.
T..
All of these people come from another dimension, and Elton, he's at the top.
